Amos Tamam – Taxi Genius

After training as an Electrical Engineer at Tel Aviv University in Israel, coming to the United States, for Amos Tamam, was a fresh start. He started out servicing taxicabs in New York City out of a fleet garage. He is still in the taxi industry after 30 years, but this time he is the CEO of Verifone Transportation Systems, Inc, a division of Verifone Corporation. Verifone Transportation Systems is the leading system providing the technology to allow taxi fleets to accept credit card payments. Amos Tamam, with his technical ingenuity and uncanny ability, was able to develop products to solve taxi fleet owner problems. He first repaired taxis, then worked on taxi meters and systems to improve fleet management and fuel management for owners. His latest development was providing fleet owners the ability to process credit cards with wireless technology. The company he started to create this technology was called Taxitonic, Inc. Amos Tamam made it possible for cab drivers to not have to carry as much cash so they will have a smaller chance of being robbed.

Amos Tamam has been working on technology to help the taxi industry for a long time. In 1992, he headed the team to create the first credit card taxi meter, which was launched under a pilot project sponsored by NYC and the popular credit card company, American Express. His company developed the prototype with the objective to reduce crime against taxi drivers allowing customers to pay electronically. By 1997, he led the creation of a high tech device with voice reminder, emergency light, pulse divider, roof light, signal lights, relay and taximeter connection on a single circuit board. By 1998, he lead the development and distribution of the Taxitronic TX36, which is the most advanced taximeter in the world. In 2004, Tamam reached an ISO agreement with IRM Payment Systems and signed a VAR agreement with AT&T. He then launched the pilot program, along with TLC, American Express, Visa and MasterCard, which was the best of the systems being used in NYC and Philadelphia today. In 2005, Amos Tamam put his efforts into the development and marketing of Verifone Transportation system, Inc, a joint venture between Taxitronic, Inc. and Verifone Holdings, Inc. Since then, Verifone Transportation Systems has been awarded the well-publicized contracts for taxi payment and automation in NYC and Philly. He is currently working toward bringing his developments to taxi riders in other cities.
